Typing an event into a calendar takes seconds, but doing it ten times a day adds up, especially when the details are buried in an email or a chat. With Gemini, you can simply say "Add a dentist appointment next Tuesday at 10 AM" and it creates the event in Google Calendar. This guide shows you how to set it up, the best prompts, and what Gemini can't do yet.
@Google Calendar add "Team call" tomorrow at 3 PM for 30 minutes. If Google Workspace isn't connected yet, Gemini will offer to connect it.Requirements
According to Google's Gemini Apps help center, you need to:
- Be signed in to the Gemini app with the same Google account you use for Google Calendar.
- Have Keep Activity turned on. Gemini can't connect to calendar apps when it's off.
- Connect Google Workspace to Gemini (you'll be prompted the first time).
On a work or school account, your Google Workspace administrator must allow access to apps in Gemini. Also note Google says the supported calendar apps aren't available in Gemini in Google Messages.
Step 1: Connect Google Calendar to Gemini
- Open gemini.google.com on your computer (or open the Gemini app on your phone).
- Check the profile picture to confirm you're in the correct account.
- Ask Gemini to create or show an event, for example: "What's on my calendar tomorrow?"
- If Google Workspace isn't connected, Gemini shows an option to connect it. Follow the on-screen instructions.
You can disconnect it later in your Connected Apps settings.
Step 2: Create an event with a clear prompt
Gemini creates events on your default calendar unless you specify a different one. Adding @Google Calendar to your prompt tells Gemini explicitly to use Calendar.
Prompt patterns from Google's help center
- "Create an event for [time] on [day, date] to [activity]."
- "Create an event for [event] at [time] on [date], add a description saying [details]."
- "Add [event name] to my calendar on [day] at [time]."
Real-world examples
@Google Calendar add "Dentist" next Tuesday at 10:00 for 45 minutes, description: bring insurance card.
Add Jumu'ah prayer every Friday at 13:30 for 1 hour to my calendar.
Create an event called "Study: chapter 4" this Saturday from 9 to 11 AM on my Study calendar.
After Gemini creates the event, it shows a confirmation with a link. Click it to check the details in Google Calendar. For recurring events, open the event afterward to confirm the repeat rule is exactly what you want.
Step 3: Use shared and secondary calendars
In January 2026 Google upgraded Gemini's Calendar tool so it can find, create and manage events on secondary and shared calendars, not just your primary one. Gemini searches across them by default when you ask about your schedule. To create an event on a specific calendar, name it:
What do I have on my Family calendar this weekend?
Move "Grocery trip" on the shared Family calendar to Friday at 5 PM.
You can modify or delete events only on calendars where you have edit access.
Step 4: Turn emails and plans into events
This is where Gemini saves the most time. Google's help center includes prompts like:
- "Show me the email that [sender] sent about [event]. Add the event to my calendar."
- "Create an itinerary for a 1-day trip in [city] with times. Add them to my calendar."
- "Check my calendar and see if I'm free for [event]."
When you have a list of dates in a chat (a class schedule, for example), you can simply say "Add these to my calendar." Review each created event, especially times and time zones.
Gemini in Gmail: another way to schedule
If you're already in Gmail, you can click Ask Gemini at the top right and type prompts such as "Create a 30 minute meeting with Kevin this week" or "Schedule 1 hour of focus time for me this week." Google's Gmail help notes that in this context, events can only be created on your primary calendar. When Gemini detects event information in an email, an Add to calendar button may appear above the message. Availability of Gemini in Gmail depends on your account and plan.
How to edit, find or undo events
- Find: "When is my next meeting with Sara?" or "What's on my calendar on Thursday?"
- Edit: "Move my 3 PM call to 4 PM." Then confirm in Calendar.
- Undo: select Undo in the confirmation notification, or open the linked event and change or delete it.
Google warns that some actions can't be undone, such as an email sent to event guests when an event is modified, and that if you created an event with Gemini Live running in the background, Gemini can't undo it.
Current limitations
- Reporting on the January 2026 update noted that Gemini still couldn't add or update the location or description of existing events, or add/invite people to events. Do those in Calendar directly. (Features change. Check Google's help center for the latest.)
- Not available in Gemini in Google Messages.
- Gemini can misunderstand dates ("next Friday" can be ambiguous). Use exact dates for important events.
- Google reminds users that Gemini can make mistakes. Always check the event it created.
Troubleshooting
"I can't connect to Calendar"
Turn on Keep Activity, confirm you're in the right Google account, and connect Google Workspace in Gemini's apps settings. On work/school accounts, ask your admin.
Events appear at the wrong time
Check the time zone in Google Calendar settings and include the time zone in your prompt when traveling ("3 PM Madrid time").
Event went to the wrong calendar
Gemini uses your default calendar unless told otherwise. Name the calendar in your prompt, or change it in the event.
Productivity ideas
- Block daily prayer times or study sessions as recurring events.
- Turn a course syllabus into calendar events in one prompt.
- Add interview dates from recruiter emails. See our AI job search guide.
- Create a travel itinerary and push it to your calendar.
- Ask for a weekly review: "Summarize my calendar for next week and flag any conflicts."
Summary
Gemini makes Google Calendar faster: sign in with the right account, turn on Keep Activity, connect Google Workspace, and use clear prompts with @Google Calendar, exact dates and the calendar name. It can now work with shared and secondary calendars too. Just remember its current limits on guests and editing details, and always click through to confirm what it created.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't Gemini add events to my calendar?
The most common reasons are that Keep Activity is off, Google Workspace isn't connected to Gemini, you're signed in with a different account, or (on work/school accounts) your administrator hasn't enabled access. Check these in order.
Can Gemini add events to a shared calendar?
Yes. Since early 2026, Gemini can create and manage events on secondary and shared calendars where you have edit access. It uses your default calendar unless you name another one.
Can Gemini invite people to an event?
Reporting from early 2026 noted that adding or inviting guests through the Gemini app wasn't supported. Gemini in Gmail can create meetings with a person from a prompt, but it can only create events on your primary calendar. Check the current help center, as features change.
How do I undo an event Gemini created?
Select Undo in the confirmation notification, or open the linked event and edit or delete it. Some actions can't be undone, such as emails already sent to guests.
Does it work with Samsung or other calendar apps?
Google's help center lists support for Google Calendar and several phone makers' calendar apps (including Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, HONOR and TECNO) in Gemini Apps, depending on device and region.
